Liverpool legend Didi Hamann has urged Jurgen Klopp to get rid of Daniel Sturridge.
Hamann, the German midfielder who spent seven years at Anfield, believes Sturridge’s injury problems are undermining Klopp’s bid to build a team capable of winning the Premier League.
And he reckons the England international’s stock has fallen so far that the Reds should put him on the market for just £20million and buy a striker who is fit for purpose.
Liverpool are on course for a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League, but Hamann insists it could be so much better if Klopp had a 25-goal forward.
“The Sturridge saga should be brought to an end this summer,” said Hamann, who won the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and two League Cups with the club.
“Liverpool should have cashed in last year, after Sturridge scored in the Europa League final, because they could have got decent money.
“Perhaps Klopp felt Daniel’s injury problems were finally behind him. But, over the last three seasons, he has only started in about 20 per cent of matches – and that’s no good to anyone.
“The fans don’t know what’s wrong with him and it seems even the manager doesn’t know what’s wrong with him half of the time. It’s got to the point where not having a striker who scores goals regularly is having too much of a detrimental effect on the team.”
Sturridge has started just nine games this season and scored only six goals in 25 appearances overall.
At the age of 27, when the striker should be at the peak of his powers, he has started just 39 matches in three seasons.
Hamann said: “Sturridge is probably Liverpool’s most talented individual, but people are now questioning his passion.
